Pipe Insulation

Pipe Insulation in Utah

Insulation for hot and cold water, chilled water, steam and condensate, and refrigerant piping.

Piping moves heat whether you want it to or not. Insulating it keeps hot lines hot, cold lines cold, and helps keep the surfaces around them dry. J&M Mechanical Insulation installs pipe insulation for residential, commercial, and industrial projects from our base in Salt Lake City.

Types of piping commonly insulated

Most mechanical systems include several kinds of piping that benefit from insulation. Domestic hot water lines lose heat between the water heater and the fixture, so insulating them helps water arrive warmer and reduces wasted energy. Domestic cold water lines can sweat in humid spaces, and insulation helps limit that condensation.

Chilled water and refrigerant lines run colder than the surrounding air, which makes condensation and energy loss a constant concern. Heating hot water, steam, and condensate return piping run hot, and insulation helps hold that heat in the system while reducing hot surfaces in mechanical rooms and occupied areas.

Indoor and outdoor runs

Pipe that runs outdoors or across rooftops faces sun, wind, snow, and freeze-thaw cycles. Those runs are usually finished with a protective jacket over the insulation so the material stays dry and in place. Indoor runs in mechanical rooms, ceilings, and chases are finished to suit the space and the system.

Fittings, valves, and elbows are often where insulation work is rushed. We treat those transitions with the same care as straight runs, because gaps at fittings are a common source of condensation and heat loss.

Working with your project team

On new construction we coordinate with the mechanical contractor and general contractor so insulation is installed after piping is tested and before ceilings close. On existing buildings we can walk the system, identify bare or damaged sections, and recommend what should be insulated or replaced.

FAQ

Pipe Insulation FAQ

It depends on the system, but commonly insulated piping includes domestic hot and cold water, chilled water, heating hot water, steam and condensate, and refrigerant lines. A walkthrough is the best way to identify which runs on your project need insulation.

When a pipe is colder than the surrounding air, moisture in the air condenses on its surface. Properly installed and sealed insulation keeps the warm, humid air away from the cold pipe surface, which helps prevent dripping.

Outdoor and rooftop piping is exposed to weather, so it is typically finished with a protective jacket over the insulation to keep it dry and in place. The right system depends on the pipe temperature and location.

Yes. We can look at existing piping, identify sections that are damaged, wet, or missing insulation, and provide an estimate to remove and replace them.
